Welwyn Garden City Cadet Detachment Visit

On Saturday 25th March 2023, a group of cadets and instructors from the Welwyn Garden City Detachment, Bedfordshire & Hertfordshire Army Cadet Force visited Winchester’s Military Museums. This detachment is cap badged RIFLES and were previously linked with the Royal Green Jackets.

The group first visited the Royal Green Jackets Museum and The Rifles Museum. I (the Assistant Curator of The Rifles Museum) guided them around both museums. The cadets were provided with quizzes, covering objects and displays throughout the collections. Despite some tricky questions, the cadets were great detectives and were able to complete them.

The cadets, aged 12-16, were excellent listeners and asked some great questions on such varied topics as the Baker rifle, British Army helmets and body armour, and the adoption of MTP camouflage. I later explained the formation of The Rifles and the origin of the ‘Golden Threads’, such as the Croix de Guerre and Back Badge.

The group then visited the Gurkha Museum. The Rifles have a regimental affiliation with the Royal Gurkha Rifles. The instructors expressed an interest in visiting the museums again with future cadets. We look forward to hopefully seeing a return visit.

We would like to thank the Welwyn Garden City Detachment for the generous donations they made to The Rifles Museum. The support is much appreciated.
